Is Pro Silva Europe moving in a too dogmatic direction?

With the most recent Priciple paper from Pro Silva, I have to ask myself wheather the organization might be moving in a somewhat too dogmatic direction. This may not be a perfect place to discuss such an issue, since this forum has not been known as the most active forum in the world, but I would try to ask the question here. I am talking about the documents that we can read here:…See More

"Long but interesting read about this forestry system. I found several English documents on the Liberich system and at first glance it looks like another variation of close to nature forestry, but with some ideas I have not seen before. Will try to…"

The foundations of Liberich or Naturkultur style of close to nature forestry

IntroductionFor the boreal zone forests of Scandinavia, the so-called Liberich or Naturkultur (here after Naturkultur) style of close to nature forestry has become both the most hotly debated and the most relevant way of practicing close to nature forestry – for those that want to try that, Pro Silva members, or not. A few years ago, a course in Naturkultur was arranged in the forests near Oslo (Oslomarka, Oslo City forest), and Pro Silva Norway invited the founder of Naturkultur, Mats Hagner,…See More

I am aware that this is not the best place to put this comment, but on the other hand, the Pro Silva webpage has something to do with forestry public relations.I would say that this page could probably have been organized in a more user friendly way. Most of all, I think about the fact that one has to look under "groups" to find the photo albums. That does not really make very good sence to me.I would also suggest to everybody that publishes pictures on this network: Please add a description,…See More

Etiënne Thomassen replied to Ingvar Åberge's discussion Sowing instead of planting?
"Seeds may be cheaper, but plants are not expensive. Labour is. You don't need as many plants as you need seeds and I think the chance of success is higher with the plants. Downside to planting is that it might not root as nicely and it might be…"

How forest standards are made

All right, it is I who start all the discussions here... I hope our clever Danish friends will arrive at the forum also. Today, I read an article in the Danish journal Skoven for May month this year, that highlights some important points about how forest standards are made, at least sometimes. The article is called "Den falske trekant og den sande betydning af bæredygtigt  skovbrug" ("The false triangle and the true meaning of sustainable forestry"). It is written by Martin Einfeldt in The…See More

The report on coastal forestry in Norway

In 2008 was published the report on coastal forestry in Norway, which caused much controversy: (Official website: http://www.kystskogbruket.no/userfiles/files/Kystskogmeldinga/Melding_om_kystskogbruket.pdf ) This report had better to be closely re-examined by Pro Silva, so what I write here are only some surficial remarks/thoughts. To go through such a report critically would, however, take…See More

Sowing instead of planting?

I have really no good place to put this discussion. Maybe there should have been one category for each of the different directions there exit within close to nature forestry? Within the "naturkultur" method of close to nature forestry (description in Swedish here: http://www-sekon.slu.se/~mats/LIBSVEN1.pdf ) forest managers are expected to plant in the openings after selective cuttings if no regeneration comes naturally. My question to…See More

Hi Ingvar

I have added categories to the forum, they are a drop down option - just so others and yourself can put info into categories.

Thanks for all the posts, someone from the UK is going to add more to the forum shortly
