share your ideas about close to nature, integrated, permanent forestry
I was excited to here there were other foresters who were taking a hard look at the way we are managing out forest around the world. Here, the historical practices of diameter limit cuts, single species removal and high-grade harvesting have decimated most of our natural hardwood forests here in Michigan. Diameter limit cuts have ruined stand sturcture, removals by species have destroyed diversity within our forest communities, and high-grading has removed superior trees, leaving our poorest trees behind to propagated the next generation. In most cases, restoring the forest ecology of these forests will take cnturies. In fact, the once beautiful, diverse and productive northern hardwood forests here in our area have become a rarity.
I am am anxious to learn more regarding close to nature practices taking place around the world.
